Policies & Fees

We strive to provide service in a professional, courteous, caring, and responsible manner. We are licensed as psychologists by the Alabama Board of Examiners in Psychology. We are bound by the Ethics codes of the American Psychological Association (APA) and Alabama Psychological Association (aPA).

We collect co-pays at the time of service. If you are uncertain of your co-pay, please call your insurance company (there is usually a toll-free number on the back of the insurance card). Our current fees are $150.00 for the first 50-minute session, and $125.00 for each subsequent 50-minute psychotherapy session. If we have an agreement with your insurance company to accept a different fee, we will honor that agreement.

If you are unable to determine your co-pay prior to your first appointment, we will ask that you pay our fees in full until your insurance company responds to our claims. Once your usual co-pay amount can be determined from claims paid by your insurance company, we will be happy to either issue you a refund (if you request it) or we will stop collecting co-pays until you exhaust your credit.

Appointments are contracted time. When you make an appointment with us, we set aside that time to spend with you. Unlike many healthcare practices, we do not "overbook" our time. We reserve the right to charge any fee that we deem reasonable - up to the full amount that would have been billed for the scheduled session - for appointments that you fail to attend or cancel with less than 24-hours notice. We do not accept e-mail to cancel or change appointments because it does not allow us to quickly offer the reserved time to someone else. You can cancel or change face-to-face appointments only by calling our office directly at (205) 758-7343.

REGARDING PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING: Psychological testing requires a great deal of professional time and can therefore be quite expensive. We charge $125.00 for each hour of time spent administering, scoring, and writing reports of test results. There is usually 1 hour of scoring, interpreting, and writing time for every two hours of face-to-face testing time though complicated situations may require more time than the usual. If you are considering seeing us for psychological testing, you can call us and we will provide you with the best estimate we can of what the cost will be in a brief conversation. We always require that you attend an initial interview appointment during which we will discuss testing options, schedules, and any other questions you might have. You should also check with your insurance company specifically about whether psychological testing for a particular issue is covered under your policy.

REGARDING LETTERS, FORMS, AND PHONE CALLS BETWEEN SESSIONS: Brief, simple letters and forms can often be completed during a session or in very little time and we consider completing these a basic courtesy for our patients. Occasional, brief phone conversations between sessions are also provided without charge. However, if a great deal of time is spent on "additional" paperwork on the patient's behalf or phone calls on the patient's behalf, we bill for this time at the rate of $150.00 per hour.

Occasionally, an insurance company overpays on one or more claims. When this happens, we refund the amount of the overpayment back to the insurance company. These insurance overpayments are not refundable directly to the patient.
